Optimal Video Formats
The following guidelines describe the recommended video specifications for ingesting content into Nomad Media. Starting with the highest quality source ensures the best results when generating streaming formats and proxy versions.
Video File
- Container formats: MP4, MXF, and MOV are most common and typically carry high-quality codecs.
- Bitrate: 15 Mbps or higher is recommended to produce a high-quality streaming experience.
- Resolution: HD (1920×1080) minimum; 2K and 4K are increasingly common.
Audio
- At least one audio track with stereo or greater (5.1 surround or better) is required for the best audio experience.
- Multiple audio tracks are supported — commonly used for different languages or audio experiences.
Subtitles
Subtitles are optional but recommended. They can be embedded in the video container or delivered as separate sidecar files. VTT and SRT are the most common formats.
Companion Metadata
Metadata is often delivered alongside the media file as a separate JSON, CSV, or Excel file. Common fields include:
- Descriptive metadata: Title, synopsis, genre, year, and other identifying information.
- Segment details: In/out timecodes representing chapters or scenes.
- Ad break locations: Timecodes for ad breaks, optionally with contextual targeting information.
